The Azores Islands
Saturday 2 April 2022 (8 Days) "I would definitely recommend this holiday.. for somewhere totally unspoilt" (Lesley) The Azores form an enchanting archipelago of nine emerald green islands set in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal (1,500km) and North America (3,900km) and these Portuguese Islands are one of the few unspoilt paradises on the planet. The Azores are characterised by their mild climate throughout the year. During the summer months – between June and October – the island enjoys long periods of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. The average air temperature ranges between 13.6°C (minimum) and 22°C (maximum) throughout the whole year. At one time thought to be part of the legendary lost continent of Atlantis, the islands were discovered in the 15th century by Portuguese navigators en route to the New World and became the link between Europe and the Americas. The islands maintain an Old World charm that is difficult to find almost anywhere else in Europe. Here in the middle of the ocean, in between the 2 continents, you can go whale watching, walking, diving, bird watching or horse riding and feel like you have dropped into your own private paradise. Our 7 night break will be based on the island of São Miguel, which maintains the typical charm of the Azores. Covering an area of approximately 747 sq Km (65 km long by 16 km wide) Sao Miguel is the largest of the Islands in the Archipelago. With a wealth of things to see and activities to do, you’ll find many scenes of untouched beauty as you explore this magical island. São Miguel is composed of two volcanic ranges with three stunning crater lakes – Sete Cidades, Furnas and Lagoa do Fogo. Sete Cidades, a green, fairy-tale crater with its twin lakes is almost ten miles in circumference while Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) is the most remote of the lakes set within an imposing mountain range. The valley of Furnas in the eastern highlands is a true paradise; with its beautiful flower-lined lake, botanical garden and Caldeiras (hot springs) guaranteed to make your visit a truly memorable one. The stunning beauty of The Azores are the result of volcanic activity. Its legacy is a stunning landscape of vast blue lakes, dark cliffs, and green valleys full of exotic plants that grow in the fertile soil. Geothermal activity still goes on in the island chain, in the form of hot mineral springs and geysers. For a leisurely trip, visit the pretty fishing port of Caloura stopping at one of the coastal restaurants on the way to try the local seafood, or head for the sandy beaches at Populo and Praia, both excellent spots to relax and enjoy the scenery. Through the city gates of the bustling capital, Ponta Delgada, lies a traditional centre, home to some beautiful examples of Portuguese architecture dating back to the 17th century. Take time to explore the narrow cobbled streets bordered by very well preserved period houses. A whole day can easily be spent here, visiting the museums and churches and sampling the local delicacies of pineapple, cheeses, wines, fresh fish and liqueurs.
