Stunning Lake Geneva in Swirzerland With Optional Golden Pass Rail Journey
Tuesday 2 February 2021 (4 Days)
From the lake to the mountains and vineyards, Montreux Riviera offers a postcard landscape. It’s an authentic little piece of paradise that has attracted many artists, writers and travellers in search of beauty, tranquillity and… inspiration.
It’s no surprise that Charlie Chaplin chose to spend his last 25 years on the hills of Vevey, that Freddie Mercury immortalised Lake Geneva with the peaks of Le Grammont on the cover of the album “Made in Heaven”, that Igor Stravinski composed “The Rite of Spring” in Montreux, or that Prince declared his love for Lavaux in a song named after the famous terraced vineyard, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lakeside promenade with its palm-tree and flower adorned shore invites visitors to take a stroll at their leisure. Alternatively, use your included Montreux Riviera card giving you free transport in Montreux and the surrounding area. A highlight for many on the trip will be the optional train journey from Montreux to Gstaad on board the Golden Pass Railway. Starting with the Mediterranean ambiance of Montreux, the train climbs above the lake and passes through a tunnel. Coming out at the other side, you find yourself among alpine forests, mountain springs and picturesque mountain villages. The train continues to Gstaad transporting you through fairytale landscapes. As you pass through Rossinière, see the Grand Chalet with its 113 windows that look out over this beautiful region. It is located next door to the train station. Balthus, the great painter also lived here. After Château-d’Oex, the names of the villages then change from French into German. You are now entering the Saanenland region, which is known throughout the world thanks to fashionable Gstaad. After free time in upmarket Gstaad, we shall retrace our steps on another memorable journey back to Montreux.
